'What Sells' Report

Paris
December 01, 2004

At the three retailers we visited, things could not have been more different! Diesel has been blowing out of pseudo military looks while H&M has been selling Heraldic and Harry Potter-esque looks instead. At Zara, things were sporty and sophisticated on the best seller list. So what was the common ground? Color! Olive, burnt orange, red, tan and denim are the Parisian palette!

Diesel

The hot look at Diesel at this moment revolves around their military flavored outerwear. Jackets are heavy and detailed with pockets, patches and true army trimmings on deck. To coordinate, Parisian parents are picking up army/ red logo trainers, red logo tees and green denim pants with innovative loop treatments.

H&M

This store feels like a trip to Hogworts! Crested tees, sweater vests and sweaters have been blowing out we are told. Also hot are argyles in general. For a traditional spin, crested argyle vests are hot but for a more forward look, parents are snapping up cut and sew sweaters with overlocking at the arm holes. Grandpa style zip front cardies are selling well as are grungy style plaid shirts. Last stop: Jeans! Whiskered and sanded 5 pocket basics are the bottom line here!

Zara

Zara has been doing exceptionally well with their well styled pinwale corduroy and light weight twill pants. Sewn on pockets, laundering, flaps and hem snap details have helped make the sale. Tees are equally hot we are told with appliqué logo looks, Northern verbiage and American references on deck. Zara’s color story is a strong sell with denim friendly and green based combos at the register most often.
