'What Sells' Report

Paris
December 01, 2004

Paris is beginning to take on a mid winter feel with warm sweaters, heavy tees and cozy blazers offered throughout these shops. Denim is still pivotal with distressed looks, holes and gray/black denim looking newest. Comic book heroes, in particular the American icons from Marvel, are finding their way onto trendy tees from Samaritaine to Zara and beyond. Neutral colors from cream to java are the best sellers while brights to pair with the new black denims are starting to get noticed. Posh blazers, embellished shirts, argyles and grampa cardigans are just some of the must have items!

Diesel

Popcorn knit grandpa cardies, textured woven shirts in neutral slate shades and glam rocker striped skinny pants are the newest movers and shakers at Diesel. Of course denim always sells here but these off beat items are moving!

H&M

H&M is selling out of blazers of all sorts from the more studious corduroy styles to the more mod velvet ones. High necked sweaters are hot in Paris and H&M’s zip neck styles are among the best in the city. Graphic tees and argyle sweaters are just the thing to pair with cardies and blazers and these more subtle and neutral tops are the movers and shakers here. Lastly, the display featuring the velvet blazer, striped tee and knit hoodie is a capsule of the hot look that is selling best in Paris at this time.

Samaritaine

What is black, white and red all over? La Samaritaine! This store has paired racy motorcycle styling with American pop icons and served up the look in gray/black denim, red leather and red or black tees for a sure fire hit. Jeans are quilted and styled for an edgier look and they are moving well we are told. The Marvel super heroes have been truly super at the register here. Also hot are tees from iconic movies such as The Godfather and Asian themed tees with embroidery over screens.

Zara

At Zara, Marvel superheroes are on the menu as well but here the ones that are blowing out are on white or black grounds and feature a more retro setting and font style. Embroidered logo sweaters and high neck zip rib sweaters are blowing out with customers looking for additional warmth. Appliqué self fabric logos on mocha colored tees have been great at the register and according to the associate, the best selling denim has been the rip and tear 5 pocket with whiskers and slight tinting.
