Milanese designers tried to be serious but the boyish charm of the season eventually won most of the designers’ hearts, and consequently, their collections. Alexander McQueen, usually a serious fellow, opted for the boyish pursuits of body surfing and polka dots for his inspiration while D Squared and Frankie Morello were inspired by their ‘Hot Wheels’ collections. Burberry’s Skittles brights were in sharp contrast to most of the designers’ focus on greys but almost all of Milan was engaged in some form of shine. Structure was seen through out in blazers, tailored jackets, and button downs with a play on sleeve lengths, from long to sleeveless. Straight leg jeans and slim cut trousers remained the focus, while voluminous, relaxed fits are starting to appear for daywear. Speedway themes brought out the ultra sporty male, with the addition of leather jumpsuits, racing jackets, and car graphics in the midst. Accessories and details tied in looks for spring with skinny ties and neck scarves for a sophisticated feel, military inspired shoulder epaulets and flap chest pockets for that officer vibe and patches, screens and taped details for relaxed looks that were both fun and active.
