Kohl's general overview

Kohl’s in the News

Kohl's January Same-Store Sales Decline

Discount retailer Kohl's Corp. on Thursday said January same-store sales fell 1.6 percent -- missing analysts' estimates for a decline of 1.3 percent according to a survey by Thomson First Call -- and said it is comfortable with current fourth-quarter earnings estimates. Kohl's said total sales for January rose 11.2 percent to $596.9 million.

Fourth-quarter same-store sales rose 1.3 percent, with total sales up 14.5 percent to $4.08 billion. Fiscal 2004 same-store sales rose 0.3 percent and total sales climbed 13.8 percent to $11.7 billion. Analysts were looking for sales of $4.1 billion in the quarter and $11.71 billion in the year.

Kohl's said it is comfortable with the current Thomson First Call consensus earnings estimate of 93 cents a share. The company said it plans to open about 95 stores in fiscal 2005 with approximately 33 stores opening during the first quarter. Kohl's shares fell 2 cents to $47.06 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Toddler and infant department overview
Kohl’s takes a very clean and proper approach to mini apparel. Carter’s makes up over 1/2 of the department visually. First Moments is the house name and they have a wall display of pink or blue related separates for baby. In mini girl’s, So(noma) has great knit separates that include funky scooters and knit tops. Osh Kosh is also on the floor with a bright coordinated grouping and some updated denim seps. In mini boys, sets are the big news. Value, styling and licenses come together here with flip flops or hats as additional give aways.

Opportunities in the infant's and toddler's department
At this time, the floor looked and felt congested with no clear line drawn between infants and toddlers. Also, there was a ton of racks with little room to maneuver a shopping cart. We would like to see more fashion merchandise for the toddler set; Evergirl and Urban pipeline already set the pace in the bigger kids departments, why not follow through with more of these great looks here. Coordinated knit separates, updated denim bottoms like clamdiggers for boys and scooters for girls would be nice here!

Woven Bottoms

Again Sonoma looks great with their belted scooters in floral prints as does Osh Kosh. Offering fashion belts with denim shorts sounds like a great idea for infants and toddlers but it is a difficult item to manage when potty training or diaper changing for that matter!
