London Retail Buzz!
July 21, 2004

The London retail scene is playing host to a trend that we have been talking about for some time: grown up looks being offered in the smallest sizes. Now that doesn’t mean that the garments are sleazy or inappropriate in any way, it just means that concepts like released hems on denim minis, mod styling, embroidery on denim, tennis dresses and gray denim are totally the norm! Other best sellers in the city include knit stripe separates in red/ white and navy combos, floral skirts with matching woven shells or camis, embroidered denim capris and commodities that are offered in packages of two for value; take a closer look!

Asda

The house brand Asda is selling the most of is "George." According to the associate here, stripey t-shirts are selling very well because they can be combined with any of the solid shorts that match nicely. Double pack items are another huge seller because of the value. The two packs feature two items of the same commodity but in a different print or style. Jersey two piece sets, jersey dresses and solid flounced RaRa skirts have also been hot here. The embroidered denim was also a successful program we are told.

H&M

Several core looks are selling well at H & M. The navy, white and red story with a touch of denim is key. Knit tops, denim jumpers and sporty knit polo and kanga pocket dresses are best. Classic Tropical colors such as pinks, oranges and yellows are played up and selling well in blocked jersey dresses, floral skirts and woven shell tops. The retro color story of tangerine, powder and sage is a close runner up in terms of key selling color combos.

Mothercare

The dominating and current best selling color at mothercare is a light tangerine. It is selling well in summery stripes, sporty woven solids and in the perennial favorite Bucket and Spade embroidered tee. Two pack basic items are another core selling item at Mothercare. In this case, early fall shoppers are already stocking up on two pack long sleeved tees with frilled hems and floral embroideries. the embroidered jumper in the red/ white story is also a very strong early fall look here. Mothercare is already showing grayed denim and because they have softened the hand, sanded the color and added floral embroideries, the look is already blowing out!

Next

At Next, the associate was really clear about what sells and what doesn’t! The softly colored Hawaiian screened tee and floral ‘mod’ skirt have been awesome we are told. The released hem denim mini and the floral embroidered flares have also been blowing out. Lastly, what could be cuter than a Dalmatian with a sparkly collar?

Zara

Two color stories have been most important at Zara; the Blues and the Tangerine shades. The mixed media flounced skirt has sold quickly as has the sporty scoop hemmed board styled mini skirt that ties into the blues theme. The cotton lace trimmed shell shirt, also in blues, also blew out. On the Tangerine side, the retro dresses in the wrap style and in the ‘Dick and Jane’ 50’s style smocked look were great sellers. Lastly, red and white sporty looks continue to perform!
