October 20, 2004

In New York City, retailers have been in the full swing of fall for a few solid weeks now. At some of the key retailers in the city, outerwear has been selling briskly as have fashionable sets, embroidered fashion looks and tan or denim separates. Take a closer look at some of the best selling looks from NYC’s best Mini retailers!

H&M

The assortment here was very different from the other retailers we visited . The sales person indicated that bolder screen prints were popular and that embroidery was also selling. Wide whale corduroy items were also in short stock. From the floor we could see that plaids, cords and the bold screens were selling briskly. Verbiage prints like "i love mommy" and "grandpa's girl" were in large supply but not as much fashion influence was noted in this department as at the other NYC stores we visited.

Macy's

Embroidered items were also selling well here. According to the associate, the Tommy Girl plaid dress with baby doll collar had been very popular, especially for the fall holiday season because of the coverage on the arms and length of the dress for a baby. The other set that she said was on fire was the poncho & denim set (pictured) the embroidery on the jeans in the set and feminine crocheted poncho was a sure fire hit. Faux fur trim things were also big items for fall as well as the leopard or animal print items. The business at Macy’s is very set driven and the sets that incorporate all the trends in an age appropriate presentation were the ones retailing best.

According to the sales associate, the fall chill in the air was prompting the buying of faux fur lined hooded jackets. The pink and tan one had sold well over the weekend and there were only 1 left in the tan and 4 in the pink. Embroidered items were being purchased heavily. Tan and brown items with appliqués and flowers were the items that shoppers were buying most often. The last key item that was mentioned was kilt skirts; the feminine approach in the kilt was key and was blowing out we were told.
