Target general overview
Target Corporation
March Sales From Continuing Operations Up 14.3 Percent
Target Corporation reported that its
net retail sales from continuing operations (principally
Target Stores) for the five weeks ended April 2, 2005 increased
14.3 percent to $4.408 billion from $3.855 billion for
the five-week period ended April 3, 2004. On this same
basis, comparable-store sales increased 8.2 percent from
fiscal March 2004.
"We are pleased with our March
sales results, which were at the upper end of our planned
range for the month," said Bob Ulrich, chairman and
chief executive officer of Target Corporation. "While
we believe these results should be considered in the context
of this year's earlier Easter holiday, our better-than-expected
sales performance in February and March gives us confidence
that we will meet or exceed our first quarter profit plan."
The merchandise categories with the
strongest comparable store sales were toys, home entertainment,
perishables/ consumables and stationary/ holiday. The categories
with the weakest sales performance of the month were garden
place/ home improvement, auto, sporting goods and domestics.
Target’s strongest markets during March were in the
South and Southeast.
Looking forward to April, the comparable
store sales plan is an increase in the range of 2 to 4
percent, reflecting the earlier Easter holiday this year.
Sales Total Sales Comparable Stores % Change
Continuing Operations (millions) % Change This Year Last Year
March $4,408 14.3 8.2 7.8

Toddler and infant department overview
Target has gone ahead and created a
line based on the 4th of July called ‘So 4th’.
This concept is the absolute cutest here in I/T because
they have tees that say, “Born in 2005” and
the styling is just a bit more thought out. Also here are
licensed sets in Dora, Care Bears, Bob the Builder, Mickey,
Minnie and Spiderman. In girls these sets are bright and
fun but very similar to one another while in boys the looks
are a bit more distinct.
What we would
like to see more of
Reversible items, panties to match sun
dresses, hats to match (sold separately but offered in
bins above apparel racks) and innovative knit bottoms.
