Raising the bar yet again, the MAGIC Marketplace was full of new and exciting exhibitor spaces and showcases along with state of the art fashion shows. The show was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center February 14-17, 2005 and included MAGIC, WWD MAGIC, MAGIC kids, and the Edge. In just four days, 3,000 men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel and accessories companies represented 5,000 brands and 20,000 product lines. All the latest Fall 2005 collections were represented and confirmed key trends and concepts going forward.

To get the most forward look at Fall ’05 for Boys, we look not only to Kids, but also to Junior as well on the Magic runway and inside booths. Layers, layers, and more layers! This trend that’s been around for the past few seasons is larger than ever and in step with Men’s, takes a turn come Fall for a more dressed up look. Woven shirts now become a key layering piece along with trainers, hoodies, and tees. While the overall colors of Fall lean towards woodsy tones, punchy bold prints spice things up with a tribal flavor on screens and prints.

From spray painted ice-cream trucks to Bentley’s, and Elvis to Japanimation, the Young Men’s booths were full of artistic inspiration for street and urbanwear.

We can’t stress enough the importance of layering! Along with the trend in Men’s to dress up casual, the Boys sizes are doing it with a slightly different edge. Whereas in Men’s the focus is on jackets as the top layering piece, in Boy’s, the attention is mainly on trainers worn over tees and woven shirts. Bottoms stay wide in mostly denim and a new wave of khaki.

An alternative to screens, embroideries are emerging on sports and athletic tees and jackets. Another alternative are embroideries on denim, seen here with a rock ‘n’ roll twist.

This show serves as yet another confirmation of trends that will continue through Fall. The show featured a woodsy palette and focused on heavy layering of tees and wovens worn with wide jeans and khakis.

We take a look at the men’s runway to get a glimpse of what is likely to be reflected in Boys. Here we see a good layering of colors, like orange over red. There are also interesting appliquéd and argyle sweaters worn with parkas and down vests, both sure to translate in the younger markets.

With layering as key, hoodies and trainers are more important than ever. The collegiate and athletic logos and numbers have all been done before and are still present. Newness comes in bold hues and contrast colors and stripes.

Quilted jackets and especially vests are important for the season. Casual style patterned jackets with banding at the bottom is a good direction for younger sizes. Sherpa lining is a trend that we see continuing.
