Raising the bar yet again, the MAGIC Marketplace was full of new and exciting exhibitor spaces and showcases along with state of the art fashion shows. The show was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center February 14-17, 2005 and included MAGIC, WWD MAGIC, MAGIC kids, and the Edge. In just four days, 3,000 men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel and accessories companies represented 5,000 brands and 20,000 product lines. All the latest Fall 2005 collections were represented and confirmed key trends and concepts going forward.

To get the most forward look at Fall ’05 for Girls, we look not only to Kids, but also to Junior as well on the Magic runway and inside booths. The underlying ethnic trend that is sweeping up Juniors is interpreted in a more casual and sporty way for Girls. In Girls, the romantic and feminine trend from Spring is carried over in a vintage thrift way, placing an emphasis on retro florals and layering. Embellishments like ethnic-inspired embroideries are essential.

Merchandized displays give us a confirmation of trends happening now and a directional view on trends to come in the Fall. Bohemian and romantic details show up in the form of vintage prints on tops. The volume skirts also continue and get a sporty twist with knit waistbands. The ethnic theme also comes into play and makes for interesting detailing and embroideries on both tops and bottoms.

Embellishments were seen across the board at the show and beaded embroideries are most important especially on tees and sweats for girls. Neck and hemline embroiders prevailed on wovens while designs like crosses pushed the point on classic tanks. Whether it is a screen with embroidery on a tee or beading on a woven, metallic gold and silver are the way to go.

The Kids runway for Fall was a showcase of trends and confirmations of what will continue next season. Denim drove the show in jeans, skirts, and jackets. The newness on denim came in when it was embroidered and screenprinted on bottoms, and tiered on a skirt. A silhouette borrowed from Juniors, the cuffed cropped pant looks strong for fall. Up top, color-blocking, and fur showed up as key. Quilted jackets and vests are back in bright colors.

On the Junior runway, volume and ethnicity are key. We see this trickle down to kids in the form of tiered shorter skirts. On tops, knits especially gain attention with interesting appliqués. The cropped knicker look is also sure to carry over to girls.

Jackets definitely dominate here. The puff style and athletic styles were most seen on the runway, while in the booth it is clear that the concept is layering over slim-fitting blazers and jackets. Continuing with the romance theme, puff sleeves and rouching make great detailing as well as fur for these lightweight layering jackets.

Sporty hoodies are always a great selling piece. The difference this time is that there are more appliqués and embroideries. The same is true on knit tops around necklines. Layering is still important, though silhouettes take on a more Victorian shape with empire waist styles.
