Now in its 15th season, Rooms has established a reputation as the most creative exhibition on the tradeshow circuit. This season’s concept was “Celestial Jungle” and the three day show took place on the 40th and 49th floor of a high-rise overlooking downtown Roppongi Hills.

Over 300 high-end brands are selected to show, including many up-and-coming new brands and edgy overseas labels looking to break into the lucrative Japanese market. Drawing on the history of ties between Japan and Brazil, recent editions have also included an exhibition space for ABEST, the association of Brazilian fashion designers.

Tokyo’s most forward fashion can be defined in a variety of different looks (that can be followed exclusively or mixed and matched a la the city’s notorious layered street look), and this is exemplified by the highlights of this season’s edition of Rooms. In line with Tokyo’s futuristic image, there is the sleek and shiny look of Hisui, who showed their pieces on the catwalk the same week at Japan Fashion Week. Rimple has a collection of understated, elegant draping pieces while Swan Lake shows off some innovative, yet quirky cuts. Una Artisana Alma channels a romantic, almost medieval look (albeit with cutting-edge textile design) and Mary Magdalena does pastoral with a slightly punk twist. Then there are the colorful toy-like designs of Ninita and Shidata Tatsuya and fusion styling and prints of Argentinean label Tramando. If we had to pick one running theme throughout the ladies’ exhibition, it would have to be the dress, which featured prominently in most collections.
