Maison & Objet is the leading trade show for furniture, decor, home furnishings, textiles, lighting and more. This show is so ripe with information, there are endless categories and sources of inspiration.

The thing that stood out most profoundly was the fact that there was a separate forum called us(e) dedicated to the overwhelming number of eco friendly products. us(e) identifies the green movement and delineates 3 trends within the movement: alternative, artsy craftsy and scrap. Alternative features new materials that are eco friendly alternatives to the status quo. Artsy craftsy uses post consumer products to create an eco-eclectic aesthetic and scrap shows us how unused shipping containers and leftover cardboard can be created into new products. Below are the displays and products in each trend as well as the verbiage straight from the creators behind us(e).

"The ecological emergency of our times makes new protocols for re-creation a must. Pointing to the figures, the eco-citizen stance advocates for reducing waste, but not pleasure. It's time for an "ecosophy" of useful glamour, which will give objects and materials a second chance. An optimistic, virtuous and upbeat approach reframes the desire to engage the world of the home in a new way, respecting the planet."
"It is the polar opposite of hyperconsumption and overproduction, of the cold, analizing mechanization of consumer goods. This ethic privileges the emotion produced by objects made in micro-production, where the work of man is more important than machines. A manifesto for the beauty of unique objects, which hearkens back to the Arts & Crafts movement."
"They're gracefully transforming raw material by creating new forms for it. Reinventing common objects allows for the discovery of new, unheard-of functions. It's an unusual, interactive object lesson, a metaphor for an era caught between the fear of an eco-disaster and the desire to create a new world."
