Target and Wal-mart will be fine-tuning their strategies as the economy skids towards a recession. While Wal-mart and Wall Street analysts insist that the low price strategy at Wal-Mart will win during tough times, we don’t foresee Target entering into the low price ring just for the sake of it. The Target strategy axis is on offering new lines, new looks and expanding the brand bases they already own.

They continue to offer their Go International designer looks in juniors and this past month marked the return of the seasonal International Bazaar in home wares. The performance branded C9 apparel has trickled in to the girl’s department while in the infant’s bedding we found the new brand extension line of Dwell called Dwell Studio offering hip bedding and room accent pieces for baby. But the biggest news at the Bulls-eye was the opening of the Converse One Star shops in juniors, young men’s and in the kids and adult shoe zones. This new line is loaded with American nostalgia, rugged craftsmanship and the brand ID that everyone is clamoring for: The Star. See the special section on Converse One Star below and take a look at the movers and shakers from Target’s retail floor!

Beginning in February 2008, Target will be carrying the One Star Collection by Converse. The One Star collection offers exclusive lifestyle and vintage inspired sportswear collections for men and women, all drawing on the brand leverage provided by Converse and their iconic All Star and Chuck Taylor shoes.

One Star footwear includes exclusive and limited edition product for men, women, and children while the One Star apparel collection focuses on the market opportunity that exists between classic sportswear and vintage athletic influences. You’ll find performance looks mixing and mingling with the iconic American shoe brand’s famous comfy shoes and accessories. Expect to see track pants paired with tailored, crinkled oxfords, dresses with skimmers and so on.

The One Star footwear collection draws inspiration from a century of history of Chucks and Converse All Stars and includes limited-edition screen prints and color ways for men, women and kids. Each item in the collection features hidden messages such as “Inspire Originality” and “Be Your Own,” adding emotional resonance to each design and creating value for fashion forward Target guests. Target invested heavily in creating a store within a store feel for the product and from what we can see, it’s already a HUGE hit. Could this concept have been closely modeled after the Candies-Kohl deal? We think so!

Target Juniors:
The knit department here is top notch with all over geometric burn out tees (that blew out) in addition to retro 80’s nostalgia screens and music art. Here too the staff has been taking its cues from Abercrombie and have been churning out heavy fleece with wash and sanding treatments for a fraction of the price. In woven tops you’ll find all of the peasant top silos needed.
